Emerging Approaches in Transdermal Drug Delivery System

Author Name : Ananthu Likhitha, K. Anie Vijetha

ABSTRACT

A transdermal patch is a medicated adhesive patch that is adhered to the skin to deliver a predetermined dose of medication into the bloodstream. This frequently aids in the repair or treats the site-specific region. The patch delivers medication to the patient in a controlled manner, either by wrapping a reservoir of medication in a porous membrane or dispersing the drug in the matrix. Transdermal administration allows for a controlled release of the drug into systemic circulation, allowing for a consistent blood level profile and increased effectiveness over other dose forms. The success of transdermal therapeutic system has created much interest in the pharmaceutical industry. Treatment of chronic diseases such as hypertension, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritic pain, asthma and diabetes by transdermal route of drug administration proves several advantages over other routes of drug administration.

Key words: transdermal drug delivery system, adhesive, novel drug delivery system, liner, novel drug delivery system.
