Petrographic Characterization of Coals from Kanchan Opencast Coal Mine Project, Johilla Coalfield, Umaria District, Madhya Pradesh

Author Name : Vikram Pratap Singh, Ravi Prakash Soni, Biplab Kumar Mahanta

ABSTRACT

The present study is an attempt to study the petrographic characterization of coals from Kanchan Opencast Mine, Johilla Coalfield, Umaria district in Madhya Pradesh to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions of formation and deposition of coal using macerals as proxies. The samples were collected using pillar sampling method. The petrographic analysis shows almost similar dominance of vitrinite and inertinite macerals, while the liptinite macerals are the least. The depositional models suggest peat was derived from herbaceous vegetation and accumulated in fen to wet forest swamps paleomire. During evolution, the basin experienced fluctuating water levels as indicated from alternate oxic to anoxic moor with good tissue preservation conditions.
