A Review on Microstrip Antennas with Modified Patch and Ground

Author Name : Ravinder Sharma, Chirag Arora

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a review on the microstrip antennas in which some modification are done in the patch and ground surface or the patch and ground are inserted with some specific structures like split ring resonators, metamaterials or periodical slots are discussed. The reason behind such modification is to improve the radiation characteristics of the microstrip antennas. The ring resonators deployed in the ground plane of the microstrip antennas can not only improve the antenna fractional bandwidth but also result in sufficient amount of miniaturization in the overall antenna size. Hence, such antennas becomes light weight and cost effective. It is also possible to obtain a antenna with dual band or multi band characteristics by modifying the patch and the ground of the microstrip antennas. These features make these antennas suitable to be used for two or more electromagnetic bands simultaneously. The modifications in the patch are done to reduce the spurious radiation from the patch and to improve the directivity of the patch antenna. Hence, the paper presents a survey on the literature available in the field of microstrip antennas having modification in patch and ground.
