Assessment of Water Quality Index in Tiruchirappalli by Using GIS
Author Name : Pradeep R, Thayalnayaki. D
ABSTRACT
The study suggests that the physiochemical characteristics of bore and well water in the Triuchirappalli district are worrisome, particularly in areas exposed to treated industrial waste water. The Tamil Nadu pollution control board’s allowable limits for various parameters were found to be exceeded, indicating a decline in water quality. This could be due to seepage of treated industrial waste water into soil, contaminating the groundwater. The excessive levels of acidity, total nitrogen, salt and mercury content in well water are particularly concerning, as they exceed the TNPCB-permissible limits. The study warns of the dangers of consuming water contaminated with industrial waste, as it can have major health consequences for the local community. Given that the Cauvery River serves as the primary source of drinking water for the entire Triuchirappalli district, it is critical to monitor and address groundwater quality issues to ensure that the public has access to safe drinking water. The source of contamination should be identified as soon as possible to treat and purify the groundwater and bring it within the TNPCB-permitted limits. This will require concerted effort by the authorities, industries, and the local community. The finding of this study serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders to take immediate action to prevent further deterioration of water quality in the Tiruchirappalli district
