Literary Study to Evaluate the Properties of Millets WSR to Brihattrayi

ABSTRACT Ayurved is a traditional Indian healthcare system from ancient times. The diet which is consumed in today’s world does not fulfil the nutritional need of our body. So we have to alter our dietary supplements to ensure nutrition riched diet. Kshudra dhanya (small grains) are described in Ayurved as millets. Ayurved has described the nutrional and therapeutics potential of millets. Common millets available and consumed in india are pearl millets (shyamyak), finger millets (ragi), kodo millets(kodarava), proso millet (chinak/ varak), foxtail millet(kangni), sorghum millet(yavanmal), coix lachrymal (gavedhuk). All the millets belong to ‘poaceae’ family. They are placed in different vargas (groups) by acharyas. Millets are included in ‘shali varga’ by aacharya charak, in ‘kudhanya varga’ by acharya Sushrut, in ashtanghriday it is mentioned in ‘trin dhanya varg ’and ‘shuk dhanya varg’. They are rich in source of proteins and minerals. According to their ras, guna, virya, vipak, they are described as ‘pathya’ in different diseases. In Ayurved,’nidan parivarjan’ (prevention of disease) is also considered as a part of ‘chikitsa’ (treatment). So we can prevent or cure the health issues by consuming millets.present study will approach to evalute the properties of millets and their roll in treating diseases.
