Muhammad Dawam Rahardjo's Social Interpretation in the Encyclopedia of Al-Quran: A Linguistic Approach Based on Key Concepts

ABSTRACT This article aims to describe and examine the interpretive method proposed by M. Dawam Rahardjo in his work titled Encyclopedia of the Qurʾan: Social Interpretation Based on Key Concepts. In the realm of Indonesian Qur'anic interpretation literature, M. Dawam Rahardjo's work is considered unique and distinct from other tafsir works of its time. The encyclopedic presentation and the discussion of social issues using an interpretive method different from his predecessors make this work one of the pioneers of thematic-social interpretation. By employing a descriptive-analytical method and a historical approach, this article attempts to explore how M. Dawam Rahardjo presents his interpretive method when discussing a particular theme in his work. The findings of this study indicate that M. Dawam Rahardjo's interpretive method is indeed novel and different from that of his predecessors, allowing his interpretations to be relevant to contemporary societal issues.
