Scaling: A Technique to Measure the Intensity in Statistics

Author Name : Dr. Ms. Shabnam S. Mahat, Ms. Ummemisbah M. Bhisti

ABSTRACT

Scaling technique is a method of placing respondents in continuation of pre-assigned values, symbols or numbers based on the features of a particular object as per the defined rules. Techniques are based on four basic parameters, i.e., order, description, distance and origin. Scaling refers to the process of assigning numbers or symbols to measure the intensity of abstract attitudes. Scales can be Uni-dimensional or multi-dimensional.

  • Uni-dimensional scales measure a single aspect or dimension of an attitude.
  • Multi-dimensional scales measure more than one dimension of an attitude.

This paper discusses the four primary scaling techniques with their application and differences.

Keywords: Nominal, Ordinal, Interval, Ratio.
