ABSTRACT
Present study was conducted with the objective of screening leaf extracts of Cassia auriculata for the detection of phytoactives using various solvents and to determine in-vitro antioxidant activities of leaf extracts of C. auriculata. C. auriculata leaves were collected fromnatural habitats in Northern parts of Karnataka. About 50 g dried leaves were coarsely powdered and subjected to successive extraction by Soxhlet extractor. The extraction was done with different solvents like methanol and ethanol. Antioxidant assay was determined for each extract. Results revealed that the major phytoactives detected in methanolic and ethanolic extract of leaves of C. auriculata werealkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, steroids, and tannins. The IC50 values exhibited by methanolic and ethanolic extract of leaves of C. auriculata were 187.68 and 247.85 µg/mL respectively. The in-vitro antioxidant activities of the methanol and ethanol extracts of C. auriculata depicted that the ethanolic extract of C. auriculata plant was found to be more effective than methanolic extract. In conclusion, biological activity such as antioxidant properties of ethanolic extract of leaf of C. auriculata was higher as compared to methanolic extracts. Hence, ethanolic extract of leaf of C. auriculata could be exploited as potential drug among traditional medicines.
