A Brief Study of Role of Haryana State in Indian Freedom Struggle
Author Name : Aditya Goyal
Haryana is one of the fast developing states of the country. Since its partition from Punjab in 1966, it has made a remarkable progress in every field of life. In the passing era, the state of Haryana is very well known and famous all over the world. It is a land of diverse cultures as well as agriculture. Agriculture is the backbone of not only Haryana but also of Indian economy. It was carved out of Punjab on 1 November 1966, as the 17 of Indian states. There are diverse interpretations about the origin of the name of Haryana. In ancient time, this region was known as Brahmavarta, Aryavarta and Brahomoupdesa. These names are based on the emergence of Brahma-Lord on the land of Haryana; the abode of Aryas and home of the preachings of vedic texts, cultures and other rites. Its other names Bahudhanyaka and Bahudhana suggest Haryana as the land of plentiful grains and immense riches. Haryana is located in the northwest India between 27 degrees 39' N to 30 degree 35' N latitude and between 74 degree 28' E to 77 degree 36' E longitude and with an altitude between 700-3600 fits above sea level. The capital of Haryana, Chandigarh, is shared by its neighboring state of Punjab, designed by Swiss born French architect, Le Corbusier. At 44,212 sq km, Haryana covers 1.34% of India's geographical area. In 2016- 17, Haryana reported a per capita income of 1,80,174 per annum as compared to the national average of 1,03,818. Haryana has 6 administrative divisions - Ambala, Rohtak, Gurgaon, Hisar, Karnal and Faridabad. Referring to the significance of Haryana in India’s ancient and medieval times, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, said: “Here were sung the first hymns of our Aryan forefathers. This was the land of Mahabharata. Beginning with Kurukshetra, some of the great battles of our land have been fought in this region. But the people of Haryana have been as much men of peace as warriors. They have proud achievements to their credit as agriculturists and craftsmen.
