A Case Study on Tea Garden Workers' Socio-Economic Status in Alipurduar District, W.B.

Author Name : Arpita Samanta

ABSTRACT

The research focused on the current state of socio-economic status of Alipurduar tea gardens. In the region, more than 150 well-organized tea estates produced high-quality tea on a large scale. The current paper examined the specifics of data from the Survey Report of the Labour Commissioner ate, the Government of West Bengal, the Tea Board of India, Census (2011). This report is an attempt to the socio-economic status, livelihood situation of Alipurduar district and to provide a suggestive measure for achieving long-term sustainability. The most important problem in the tea garden has been revealed to be poor pay, which has restricted the expansion of tea garden employees and forced them to live in poverty. Even though the bulk of the employees are illiterate, they are now encouraging their children to study. The labourers do not own the property on which they work, despite the fact that they have lived on the tea garden for generations. The shock overpowered several tea estates, forcing them to close their doors. The financial calamity has occurred from the shutdown of the garden and the labour strike. Because employees' pay is so low, they can't afford even the most basic necessities of existence, trapping them in a vicious cycle of poverty, illiteracy, hunger, and so on. When the tea garden is shut out or the job is temporarily interrupted, the situation of the tea workers becomes increasingly precarious. Because the worker lacks agricultural land and other sources of income. They are unable to feed themselves as a result of the shutdown of the tea garden, and many people have perished as a result of malnutrition.
