ABSTRACT
The tax system in India has undergone major reforms over the past few decades to make it more efficient, transparent and fair. However, despite these efforts, the system continues to face a number of problems that hinder its effectiveness. This paper critically examines the tax system in India, focusing on the main challenges and opportunities for reform. It analyzes the current tax structure, its impact on various sectors of the economy and the potential for increasing revenue mobilization while ensuring fairness and equity. The study also identifies some key constraints that hinder tax compliance and suggests some policy recommendations to address these issues.
