Author Name : Dr. Ch. Krishna Murthy
ABSTRACT Gurajada Appa Rao, The Famous Telugu Playwright And Poet, In His Play “Kanyasulkam” Criticised Many Evil Practices That Were In Vogue In The Latter Part Of The 19th Century In Andhra Pradesh. Some Of Them Were The Practice Of Taking Bride-Price, Prohibiting Widow Remarriage, Encouraging Prostitution Among The Nautch Women Etc. Gurajada Employed Comedy As The Dramatic Mode And Tried To Create Verbal As Well As Situational Humour. He Foregrounds An Encounter Between Modernity And Tradition That Finds Its Relevance In This Play. Through This Analytical Essay I Want To Present The 19th Century Telugu Society With All Its Evil Practices And The People’s Craze For English Learning As Shown Through The Character Of Venkamma.
