A progress analysis of MGNREGA: A case study of India

ABSTRACT
The Development of Rural area is the one of the primary goal of any socio-economic scheme which is implemented by the Central and State governments in India. MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) is one of the target oriented programme which playing vital role among rural masses with uplifting the livelihood condition by involving them in new jobs opportunities in many of the States. The NREGA scheme was renamed as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in 2005 and which declared as the pragmatic towards the problems of unemployment and rural poverty in India. In fact, the programme ensures the economic security of the rural poor by providing guaranteed wage employment for minimum 100 days meanwhile it has given positive result in employment generation. By using official data this paper revealed the progress of this scheme by analyze the state-wise performance of the MGNREGA in terms of Job cards Issued; employability demanded and provided; Work completed and ongoing under this programme across the India. It is also suggested in this paper that in future, more such target oriented programmes should be implemented in India so that, the gap between poor and rich and rural and urban areas could be bridged.
