A Qualitative Study: Menstrual Stigma and its Impact on Mental Health

ABSTRACT The study aims to understand the effect of menstrual stigma in the Indian context and how It affects women's mental health. The physical and psychological challenges due to stigma, taboos attached to menstruation and its effect on mental wellbeing. Narrative approach is taken for this research. Sampling method is a non probability purposive sampling. Participants for the research are females who have experienced menstrual stigma in their life. The Age range of participants is 18 - 25 and the interview is semi- structured which had open ended questions. Overall, the Braun and Clarke thematic analysis is being followed throughout the study. The study emphasizes the need for menstrual health education and awareness campaigns, as well as the role of mothers in providing understanding and support. Overall, the Braun and Clarke thematic analysis reveals several key themes related to menstrual health, including the lack of knowledge and education, poor communication, cultural taboos and stigma, access to menstrual resources, and the importance of support and encouragement for menstrual health management. The findings have implications for public health policies and initiatives aimed at improving menstrual health and well-being, particularly in underserved and marginalized communities.
