A Review Article: Premenstrual Syndrome (Premenstrual Tension)

ABSTRACT Premenstrual syndrome is classified as a psycho-neuro-endocrine disorder with an unclear origin, also referred to as premenstrual tension or PMT. While the precise cause remains unidentified, several hypotheses have been proposed within contemporary medical science. Symptoms associated with PMS typically manifest a few days before the onset of menstruation. Ayurveda adopts a holistic perspective towards disorders such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). This approach involves adjusting daily routines in alignment with Dinacharya, tailoring dietary choices to an individual's Prakruti, and utilizing specific medications to maintain the equilibrium of the Doshas that contribute to PMS. A concise overview of these management strategies will be presented in the following discussion. This condition is more commonly observed in women aged 30 to 45 years. According to Ayurvedic principles, there is no explicit mention of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The Artava-chakra, or menstrual cycle, is categorized into three phases based on the specific dominance of Doshas: Ritukala, Ritu-vyateetkala, and Rajakala. The manifestations of PMS can be associated with Ritu-vyateetkala, as well as the symptoms of Pitta-avritta-vyana vayu within the Ayurvedic framework.
