A Review on Decentralization Protocols for Social Media Application
Author Name : Mohd Faisal Mohd Sadique, Sumeet Darji, Saurav Rajwani, Stevina Correia
ABSTRACT
The number of social media users worldwide in 2020 is calculated to be 3.81 billion with a year over year growth rate of 9.2%. Most of the social media traffic accounts for the use of social media apps from behemoths like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Only a few of the companies handling the user data collected through tracking the user activities on social media platforms gives them an undue advantage of using that data and user privacy becomes a major concern. In this paper, the authors have conducted a detailed survey of the difference between centralized and decentralized systems. Multiple emerging protocols are surveyed in order to suggest the most optimal protocol for the implementation of decentralized social media applications. Based on the most optimal protocol, an approach for developing a distributed application is proposed in the paper that provides users with complete control over their data.
