A Review on Osmotic Drug Delivery System
Author Name : Rapol Swathi, Dr M. Sunitha Reddy
ABSTRACT
Novel drug delivery systems (NDDS) are the key area of Pharmaceutical Research and Development. Many conventional drug delivery systems have been designed to modify the release ofdrugs over an extended period. Osmotic Drug Delivery System utilizes the osmotic pressure for the controlled release of drugs by using osmogens in an optimized manner to maintain the drug concentration within the therapeutic window and tominimize the toxic effects. Osmotic pumps consist of an inner core that containsdrugs and osmogens, coated with a semi-permeable membrane. The drug release from ODDS follows zero-order kinetics. They are used for both oral administration and implantation. The release of drugs from ODDS depends on various factors such as osmogens, excipients, orifice size, solubility, and membrane characteristics. This article highlights the principle of osmosis, history, different types of osmotic systems, components of ODDS, applications, and marketed products of this system.
