ABSTRACT
Quantum dots are nanoscale semiconductor crystals, typically 1 to 10 nanometres in size that can glow or fluoresce brightly when excited by a light source, such as a laser. Quantum dots are tiny bits of microscopic metal a thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair or semiconductors, such as cadmium serenade zinc sulphide. Quantum dots are emerging as a new class of fluorescent probes to image bio molecules and cells. The nature of this technology makes it suitable for applications such as in- vivo imaging, including imaging of live cells and healthy animals, blood cancer detection, cancer detection and therapy. This review focuses on the application of quantum dots and provides a detailed overview of quantum dots, their synthesis, properties and applications, toxic effects, use in imaging and analysis, and quantum dot drug delivery systems.
