ABSTRACT
Osteoarthritis is the degeneration of articular cartilage characterised by osteophyte fomation.Type 2 DM is a chronic metabolic disease causing high glucose levels ,which can induce high pain and inflammation in OA subjects due to the strong pathophysiological correlation. The hyperglycaemia induced glycosylation end products can stimulate the chondrocyte expression of proinflammatory and prodegnerative proteins which contribute to increased IL-6 and TNF alpha circulating levels in Osteoarthritis patients .So independent of other common etiologies like age, gender ,obesity for OA, hyperglycaemia can itself contribute to Osteorthritis. These correlations emphasises a strong hope that adequate blood glucose control and adherence with antidiabetic medication hampers the development and progression of Osteoarthritis. This articlereview the impact of DM in OA pain severityand health status, As DM is the only standalonefactor and the risk of TJR in diabetic and non diabetic population and the effect of certain drugs in these population.
