Author Name : Dr. Kh. Jugindro Singh

ABSTRACT

Urbanization refers to the proportionate increase of the urban population in relation to the total population in a given country. The study of urban geography and urbanization is a relatively recent phenomenon dating essentially after the Industrial Revolution in the mid-nineteen century. The objectives of this paper are identifying and analysing the urbanization of Manipur as if it has a concomitant phenomenon involving the process of conglomeration approach.  The data used in the present work has collected from secondary of Census records and field visits to the important towns to determine that vigorously increase towns are qualified to be treated as town or not. The trend of urbanization in the state was confined within the limit of Imphal town till 1961 census and bringing the total number of 8 towns in 1971. This means that the state as a whole was economically backward in the early decades. The number of urban centres in the state has been increased 32 in 1981 and again decreased to 30 in 1991 where two hill towns were deleted for not fulfilment of demographic criteria and it has dramatically increased to 51 towns in 2011. The fast tempo of urban population growth and urbanization in Manipur is a concomitant phenomenon, involving the process of conglomeration approach. During the post statehood in 1972, Manipur has been gradually increasing number of urban centres. These expansions of urban centres in the state has aggravated based on socio-economic conditions, improved infrastructure, rural-urban migration, sprung up market centres, Advancement of transport and communication.
