A study on antibacterial and antigastric cancer activity of Sechium edule (Chayote) fruit extracts against HGC-27 cell line
Author Name : K. Rajathi*, K.B. Leneeygreen, Ritty Joseph
ABSTRACT Sechium edule is a one of the human consumption plant in the world, in which plant fruits and seeds have prosperous quantity of nutrients properties and rich amount of flavonoids, tannins. Previous studies showed that the Sechium edule fruit contain antioxidant, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, and antiulcer properties. Hence the current study were focused to investigate the antibacterial activity of some food borne pathogens (E.Coli, Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruguinosa, MRSA, and Vibrio cholerae) and to evaluate the in vitro anti-gastric cancer activity of Sechium edule. The preliminary phytochemical analysis showed the presence of secondary metabolites and antibacterial activity of the Sechium edule reveals admirable results against food borne pathogens. The results suggest that the Sechium edule has potential cytotoxicity against human gastric cancer cells HGC-27 and the IC50 value is 102.04μg/ml. From the study it was concluded that the Sechium edule fruit have excellent inhibitory concentration of food borne pathogens and in vitro anticancer activity against HGC-27 cell line.
