A Study on Environmental Awareness among Secondary School Students

ABSTRACT
Man is a part and parcel of his environment and is totally dependent on it for physical, cognitive emotional, spiritual, religious and moral development. The qualitative development and quantitative progress of mankind depends on the quality of the environment. Therefore, there may not only to preserve the environment but also improve it qualitatively. The intensive application of science and technology combined with man’s greed to overexploit the natural resources, the unprecedented rapid population growth, modern process of production and consumption, and change in human life style have in their wake brought serious environmental problems. Man has to tackle his environment every day to his survival and prosperity. It’s very necessary to know about several features of natural environment. Environment is a source of happiness to man, and his happiness will be heightened, if he learns to love and care the nature.
We live in the new millennium. The scientific and technological developments have touched upon every aspect of human life and have produced a comfortable living climate for the human-beings on this earth: but they have also added to our discomfort in the form of environmental degradation, threat of nuclear war and an unhealthy materialistic attitude at the cost of human values. We experience a lot of problems due to environmental pollution. It is predicted by the environmental specialists that India is one of the important developing countries, which will be suffering a lot due to the environmental pollution within the next 25 years. Therefore, it is important to create environmental awareness among the people; otherwise, we will be paying a heavy price.
