A premature or low birthweight baby's chances of survival are greatly increased by kangaroo mother care, which entails skin-to-skin contact and exclusive breastfeeding. Up to 150,000 additional lives could be saved annually by beginning kangaroo mother care as soon as the baby is born. The benefit of KMC includes boosting child survival, minimising infant mortality, promoting breastfeeding, and decreasing the number of low birth weight infants returning to facilities after being discharged from the centre. The current study aimed at creating awareness among the primi mothers and regarding kangaroo mother care especially for preterm and low birth weight babies. A quantitative one group pretest and post test test study was conducted by using purposive sampling technique among 100 primipara mothers. The study results revealed that the structured teaching programme is effective in improving the knowledge and practice of primipara mothers on kangaroo care. Knowledge of kangaroo mother care has a favourable impact on the attitude and practise of KMC. Kangaroo mother care increases the mother's confidence in her ability to care for the preterm newborn.
The study also recommended to conduct more such studies for the benefit of preterm and lowbirth weight babies.
