ABSTRACT With the rapid changes and accessibility of digital technology modern life is now mediated by information communication technology(ICT) as a consequence not only adults but children are also now surrounded by technology-based microsystems. The young generation is therefore growing up with technology-oriented and knowledge-based global society. As a result, the basic skill regarding the ability to utilize a computer is required for professional success and contributing to this rapidly changing society. Therefore, acquisition of computer literacy is an undeniable task for the younger generation. Children have a natural tendency to learn independently when they encounter or are surrounded by the appropriate environment by self-directing themselves. This systematic review was conducted with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines to find evidence that children can acquire computer literacy through selfdirected learning. A comprehensive screening was performed in the databases to locate pertinent literature published in English and a search was completed on 5th March 2024 and 21 studies are included. Evidence revealed that children can learn to utilize computers on their own irrespective of their social, cultural, or economic backgrounds, they have their own natural learning style and they can learn from their own mistakes by observing others or by directing their own actions. They do not learn passively, by giving the proper infrastructure, environment, and opportunities, they can acquire computer literacy by self-directing and organizing themselves, correcting previous mistakes and improving gradually which will lead to competency and creativity.
