Adrienne Rich’s Concept of Lesbian Continuum: Questioning Heterosexuality

ABSTRACT

Adrienne Rich argues that women are driven to sexual slavery through continuous socialization, the media, the family, and the institution of motherhood. According to her, the assumption that most women are innately heterosexual stands as a theoretical and political stumbling block for feminism. Women must question heterosexuality as “preference” or “choice” or “natural”, to open new vistas of freedom and power, and a new vision in personal relationships.
