AI's Role in Fashion Design: Ally or Adversary in Apparel and Textile Innovation?

ABSTRACT This conceptual paper examines the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the apparel and textile design industry, focusing on its benefits and challenges. AI offers advantages such as enhanced design precision, waste reduction, and supply chain efficiency. Still, it also presents drawbacks, including increased consumption, ethical concerns, and the potential displacement of human designers. The study highlights that AI is being adopted in the fashion industry without sufficient attention to its implications, emphasizing the need to priorities sustainability in its usage. A notable gap exists in oversight regarding AI applications and their consequences within the sector. This review while addressing the benefits, challenges, and sustainability considerations of AI in fashion, fills a critical gap in existing literature.
