An Analysis of the Development of GI in India with Specific Reference to DPIIT’s Draft Guideline on Geographical Indications Logo and Tagline

ABSTRACT Geographical Indications (GIs) play a crucial role in protecting products with unique qualities tied to their geographical origin, offering economic benefits to producers and preserving cultural heritage. While India possesses a rich diversity of such products, the effective implementation and enforcement of GI protection have faced numerous challenges. This paper analyzes the development of the GI system in India, with a specific focus on the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade’s (DPIIT) draft guideline on a common GI logo and tagline. The paper examines the legal and procedural aspects of this guideline, assessing its potential to enhance GI promotion and market access.
