Angst and irresoluteness of Harry Angstrom in John Updike’s Rabbit, Run

Author Name : Dr. Koteswara Rao, P. VijayaSatish

ABSTRACT

Updike has created a character who is neither cerebral nor poetic, but simply is an average middle class man who is flabbergasted by the ever-changing world around him. Unable to cope with feelings he cannot accurately express and dissatisfied with religion and the moral value structure presented to him, Rabbit chooses to run. Updike has created a befuddled, unfulfilled character incompetent to accommodate the restricted requirements of oneself and the implicit understanding, especially with regard to relational connections. Rabbit, Runepitomises a piercing record in the realist mode of the fluctuating moralities and demeanors of the American society.
Keywords: Angst, flight, spirituality, freedom of choice.
