ABSTRACT

The addition of antimicrobial agents to toothpaste is one possible way of improving the efficacy of mechanical tooth cleaning procedures as well as aiding the control of dental plaque, preventing dental caries and periodontal diseases. Bacterial isolates comprising of Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtiliswere exposed to four fluoride containing toothpastes(A , B , C, and D ) at different concentrations, 50mg/ml, 100mg/ml, 200mg/ml, and 400mg/ml respectively. In the following study antibacterial efficacy of toothpastes was tested against Bacillus subtilis and E.coli. Different composition of toothpastes that were mixed with 1ml distilled water was plated with Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis and the plates were then incubated in incubator for 24 hours. The results onpetriplates in the form of clear zones were observed, which depicts antibacterial efficacy of different toothpaste againstEscherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis.
