Application of Machine Learning with Convolutional Neural Networks to Prevent Injuries Caused Due to Compound Movements and Exercises
Author Name : Arush Singh
ABSTRACT
In today's day and age, fitness has become a keystone part of the lifestyle of many people. Teenagers and adults usually join gyms and perform exercises known as compound movements. These movements are also performed by athletes and bodybuilders to improve physical performance, endurance and to achieve muscle hypertrophy. The growing influence of social media on fitness standards has caused many teenagers to perform several popular compound movements without proper form and technique. This can lead to major injuries like fractures, disc herniations, and muscle ruptures. One such compound movement known as the deadlift is extremely popular among athletes and gym-goers. A deadlift is an exercise in which a barbell rod loaded with plates is lifted off the ground to train the upper and lower body at the same time. This paper aims to study the application of machine learning models in detecting errors in the technique and form of people performing the deadlift compound movement to reduce the risk of injuries. Training a machine learning model to detect errors in the form of individuals performing deadlifts would not only help to reduce the risk of injuries but would also help athletes, powerlifters, and gym-goers improve physical performance by learning about the error in their technique. As most people don’t have access to proper coaches and trainers, this model would help young fitness enthusiasts achieve their fitness goals with proper form and technique which will keep them injury-free.
