Artificial Intelligence in Structural Engineering: A Comprehensive Review
Author Name : Dr Shivanand V Chanaveere
ABSTRACT This paper aims to create a knowledge base of structural analysis-based design improvements for an intelligent decision support system. Civil engineering problems are inherently unique, and influenced by factors like budget, structural importance, and site conditions. Despite decades of computer-aided structural analysis, computers haven't been fully utilized for design and planning. This is due to the problem-specific nature of design, the need for logical reasoning, practical constraints, and the reliance on experience. Expert systems can address some of these challenges by encoding design knowledge for automated problem-solving. Artificial Intelligence (AI), a powerful technology, enables computers to tackle problems lacking algorithmic solutions, requiring human intelligence and expertise instead. Expert Systems (ESs) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), prominent AI applications, are now widely accepted in various professional domains. Artificial neural networks draw inspiration from biological neural systems' structure and algorithms.
