Assessment of antibacterial activity and phytochemical screening of Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)

Author Name : Mr. Prakash Solanki, Dr. Swati Goyal

ABSTRACT

For thousands of years, plants have been used as a source of medicine. Even today, the World Health Organization estimates that up to 80% of people still use herbal remedies as their primary source of medicine.Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)plant is one of them. Alkaloids, saponins, triterpenoids, bacoside, and sterols are among the compounds responsible for Brahmi's pharmacologic actions. As per Ayurveda, all parts of the plant are highly beneficial for human health. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)has antimicrobial protentional, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory.

The present study was investigating the phytochemical and antibacterial activity of Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri). The extracts of Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)were prepared using ethanol with 90 % solvents. The phytochemical analysis and antimicrobial activity test of extracts were performed. The presence of alkaloids, glycosides, carbohydrates, steroids, polyphenol, saponins, and terpenoids were indicated by testing. The antimicrobial activity shownin samples is performedby the zone of the inhibition Testmethod.Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)was activeagainstGram-negative bacteriai.ePseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC No.9027 and Gram-positive Bacteriai.e Staphylococcus aureus ATCC No 6538.This studysuggests that the antimicrobial properties of Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)may be due to the presence ofchemical compounds.
