Ayurvedic Approach to Grahani: A Review

ABSTRACT The word Grahani in ayurveda is related to Agni (digestive fire) which helps in the metabolism and digestion of food. Ayurvedic texts describe the ingestion, digestion, absorption and assimilation of Aahaar by Grahani. Normally it retains the undigested food And releases the digested stuff through the side of its lumen. Any disturbance in Agni leads to an improper Digestion of food. Grahani Roga (duodenal disease) is an indisposition in which patient is unable to digest the food properly and passes it out frequently through motions in the undigested or digested form without foul Smell.The consistency of the stool changes frequently, sometimes Loose and sometimes well formed. Grahani Roga is one of the digestive disorder affecting the digestion and metabolism, which is hard to diagnose and difficult to be cured as it involves the entire metabolic pathways. The pathogenesis of Grahani roga works around Agnidosha which associated with impaired digestive function of digestive fire. Ayurveda described various treatment modalities for the management of Grahani roga such as; use of herbs & formulation, yoga and life style modification. Present article summarized ayurveda perspective of Grahani roga and its management by ayurveda principles.
