Carbuncles as a Risk of Diabetes Mellitus:- A Case Study
Author Name : Sandra S, Dr. Krishnaprabha C
ABSTRACT A painful subcutaneous mass of diseased hair follicles joined by many discharge sinuses is called a carbuncle. It is more likely to occur in situations when immunity is weakened, diabetes, chronic skin problems, etc. The case study presented here deals with a 48-year old female diabetic patient with a massive carbuncle on her back(left). Its magnitude, systemic co-morbidity, and higher risk of surgical treatment problems prompted involvement of both general surgery and general medicine teams. She underwent an emergency incision and drainage simultaneously with a debridement which was successful. She was further managed with antibiotics and anti-diabetic medication. She was discharged with an advice to continue a daily wound dressing and follow up and medical and surgery departments after 1 week. The main goal of this study is to demonstrate the significance of both early carbuncle diagnosis and multidisciplinary team involvement throughout the treatment process. Appropriate tissue culture investigations to determine the organism causing the infection, followed by the right antibiotic treatment, comorbidity control, and, if necessary, surgical reconstructions followed by a regular dressing to promote wound healing and keep infections from recurring.
