ABSTRACT A photonic crystal biosensor is a small device that monitors variations in the wavelength of transmitted light by the interaction with a bio sample. In the study, we present a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal based biosensor with a hexagonal ring Resonator that consist of two straight wave guides. Malignant cervical cells showed a comparable shift in resonant wavelength due to the change in refractive index when compared with healthy cells. The structure of a ring resonator is designed and simulated using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. This method has the potential to be exploited in biomedical applications; helps identify cancer in its early stages. The proposed sensor has a quality factor (Q) of 1121.11.
