Changing Cropping Pattern in Haryana: A Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Major Food Crops

ABSTRACT
The cropping pattern of a crop determined by the number of factors in an area of production, and also determines the food habits of the local population. There are many changes take place in the cropping pattern of Haryana since the Green Revolution during the 1960s to dates. Wheat and rice are the major staple food crops of the Haryana state for which the green revolution was very successful. The present research article is attempted to present an analytical account of wheat and rice crops in the Haryana. Analysis reveals that the sown area and yield under wheat and rice suffer from temporal as well as a spatial variation over the reference period of the study i.e. 2001-2018 across the districts of Haryana. The Cropping pattern of Haryana highly affects by the green revolution because it enhancesthe production and price of wheat and rice which affects the mindset of the farmers. However, the present pattern of farming in the Haryana has completely been transformed from intensive farming to market-oriented forming of the crops for profit-making business. Extensive market-oriented agriculture farming in Haryana has affected the soil fertility, underground water table, nutritional value of crops and environment as well.
