Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Is Effective In Subjects with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome? - A Narrative Review

ABSTRACT

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifactorial disorder affecting females in their reproductive ages. This condition is diagnosed in females with hyperandrogenism, oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, acne, hirsutism, insulin resistance, obesity, and infertility. Physiological alterations are complimented with various psychological symptoms in patients, such as poor self-esteem, depression, negative body image, and decreased quality of life. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) protocols have been developed that specifically address various cognitive and behavioral maintenance factors of the various disorders. The overall goal of treatment is symptom reduction, improvement in functioning, and remission of the disorder. The aim of the review is to find out the effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) on physiological and psychological factors in subjects with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Articles are being reviewed from last 10 years (2012-2022) by different search engines like Google Scholar and PubMed. Articles which are Only RCTs, in English Language and Free full texts were included in this study. Article showed positive effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on eating behavior, metabolic health, body image, self-esteem, depression, obesity, emotional well-being and quality of life which are assessed through various subjective and objective methods on the subjects with PCOS. Thus, the study concluded that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is effective along with the Physiotherapy in improving various physiological and psychological factors in subjects with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
