ABSTRACT

The study compared the internal efficiency of education in public and private secondary schools in AkwaIbom State between 2014/2015 and 2019/2020 academic sessions. Four research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A sample size of 325 principals of which 127 were public and 198 from private secondary schools was drawn for the study using multistage sampling procedure. Internal Efficiency Inventory (IEI) was used for data collection. The researcher together with two research assistants collected data for the study using the direct delivery method and 98% return was recorded. Data analysis was done using frequency and percentage. The findings of the study revealed among others that male students in public and private secondary schools recorded 98.7% and 99.2% completion respectively for the academic sessions understudy which was slightly higher than their female counterparts that recorded 98.3% and 99.0% respectively. Based on the findings, it is recommended among others that the principals should advocate for special attentions on girl child education to eradicate the gender gap in the completion rates in public and private secondary schools.
