Comparative Analysis of Radiation Performance and Bandwidth of Planar, Conformal Micros trip Patch Antennas

Author Name : D. Kanthi Sudha, P. Chandrasekhar Reddy

ABSTRACT

Microstrip patch antennas are the most used antenna types in the present. Having advantageous mechanical characteristics like low profile, light weight, planar but conformal to non-planar structures, easy to fabricate, flexibility in terms of electromagnetic parameters - radiation pattern, gain, impedance, polarization and low cost they are being preferred as conformal antennas. In this paper, a comparative analysis will be drawn towards the performance characteristics of a conformal antenna with its planar counterpart in terms of its bandwidth and polar radiation pattern. This analysis can aid in making a right design choice between a conformal antenna or a planar antenna, specific to the application. For this analysis, a Microstrip Patch antenna operating at 2.4GHz (ISM band) is taken as the reference antenna to draw the comparison.
