Author Name : Maharudra Rakh, Dr. J. Banurekha, Dr. M. Kumar, Dr. B. S. Venkateswarlu

ABSTRACT

The present paper reports the phytochemical studies of Momordica charantia and Momordica dioica which belongs to the families Cucurbitaceae, which is a slender, tendril climbing, annual vine. Bitter melon is a common food in tropics and is widely used as medicinal plants in countries like India, Brazil, China, Africa etc.  In the present study the qualitative analysis confirmed the presence of various phytochemicals. In Momordica charantia primary metabolites Phenols, Saponins, Alkaloids,  Flavonoids,  Anthraquinones,  Cardiac  glycosides, Carbohydrates,  Triterpenoids and  Steroids were present  in  Methanol,  Ethyl acetate, Petroleum Ether  and Aqueous extracts as well  Momordica dioica showed Phenols, Saponins, Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Anthraquinones, Cardiac glycosides, Carbohydrates, Triterpenoids and Steroids except Tannins and Anthraquinones in  Methanol,  Ethyl acetate, Petroleum Ether  and Aqueous extracts. The medicinal values of Bitter melon lies in the bioactive phytochemical constituents  that  are  non  nutritive  chemicals that  produce definite physiological effects on human body and protect them from various diseases. Analysis revealed the presence of similar kind of Phytochemical in both fruit pulp and seed extracts.  The present study confirms the wild relationship of Momordica charantia and Momordica dioica, which can be further explored to the comparative biological activity for further confirmation.
