ABSTRACT

Having a total coastal tract of about 7,516 km with 5,400 km long mainland coastline, India is the seventh largest country of the world with highly vulnerable to natural hazards like tropical cyclones. Tropical cyclones are most frequentlyaffecting natural disaster in India. The consequences ofthe tropical cyclones are Storm surges, flood, highwinds, inundation, and erosion etc. Tropical cyclone warning messages providedetailed information about the storm intensity, position,direction and its velocity of movement as well as itsfuture direction, intensity and its landfall positions.India is mostly affected by thecyclones originating from Bay of Bengal. It is found that frequency of cyclones with various intensitiesoriginating in Bay of Bengal is very high and is fourtimes that of originating in the Arabian Sea.The main cyclone seasonin the South Indian Ocean observed is May-July andSeptember-December with major occurrences of stormsin April and August from the historical data.Each year India has to fight against a several number of tropical cyclones.
