Defiance & Downfall: The Episode of Hyderabad State 1947-1948

ABSTRACT

The most long drawn and perhaps much debated facet of integration of princely states with Indian Union is the end of Asaf Jahi state of Hyderabad. Right from the famous June 3rd plan of Mountbatten till date, the end game for Hyderabad state the Police Action and operation polo has been attracting the attention of scholars evoking a plethora of perspectives and novel possibilities for historical research. The movement for a separate state of Telangana and its creation in 2014 re-kindled the academic interest in various aspects of Telangana history and Hyderabad has naturally been at the forefront. It is in this context that one can justify a re-look at the historical realities and implications of Hyderabad’s integration into the Indian union in 1948.

The present paper attempts at capturing political games, compulsions and process of the crucial years of 1947-48 in history of independent India and history of Telangana by taking up a fresh look into the turn of events and popular perceptions. It examines and evaluates Historiographical positions and flags of points for further research into this key area of Indian history in particular and Telangana history in general. It covers broadly the process of integration, implications, Historiographical positions and potentialities for further studies.
