Demographic profile of citrus fruits growers in Haryana: A case study of two districts

ABSTRACT Haryana is a growing state in the field of agriculture, horticulture and various industries. It occupies only 1.4 percent geographical area of the country but contributes significantly in gross domestic product. The Sirsa and fatehabad district of the state are engaged in citrus fruits cultivation. The cultivation of citrus fruits is assessed and controlled by department of horticulture. The present paper deals with the demographic profile of the growers of the selected districts for obtaining knowledge about their education, family size, occupation and technical knowledge. The demographic profile of respondents such as age, education, family size and technical progress have significant impact on the level of knowledge, efficient cultivation and more earning from orchards,whereas, the response of landholders in effective espousal of these constituents is not satisfactory. They are engaged in the cultivation of orchards without experience under family pressure due to paucity of exposure to other sectors. The landholders' qualification and untrained cultivation practices not only discourage them but also shrink the return.
