Design and analysis of a passenger vehicle multi-leaf tandem axle trailer leaf spring

Author Name : Kare Jagadeswara, Satyanarayana Tirlangi, Seeram Roopa, Attili Narendra Kumar

ABSTRACT In four-wheelers, heavy trucks and railways, the leaf spring is one of the main components, provides good suspension, and plays an important role in automotive application. Withstands transverse loads, braking torque, drive torque and damping. The crossbow assembly is used to absorb and store energy and thus release it. Leaf springs are made up of flat plates that are usually semi-elliptical in shape. The truck's multi-leaf tandem leaf spring is modeled in Creo Parametric 2.0 and analysis is done with ANSYS15.0. A comparative study was carried out between composite and steel leaf springs in terms of weight, cost and strength. Steel tandem leaf spring is compared to compound tandem leaf spring, compound main leaf tandem leaf spring, and steel master leaf tandem leaf spring. The latter is compared to the monocomposite crossbow. Modal and harmonic analysis is carried out and compared for the five different variants.
