This project explores the antioxidant properties of tomato extract, focusing on the identification and utilization of lycopene as a key antioxidant compound. The antioxidant potential of tomato extract was evaluated through assays, including DPPH scavenging activity and revealing its significant antioxidant activity. Lycopene was subsequently isolated and identified as the predominant antioxidant compound present in the tomato extract using chromatographic techniques such as phytochemical test. Furthermore, the %RSA (radical scavenging activity) and IC50 values for lycopene were determined using the DPPH assay. The %RSA values for lip scrubs, lip serums, and lip balm were found to be 93.22%, 90.73%, 92.13%, and 91.57%, respectively. The IC50 values were calculated to be 33.12 µg/mL, 31.69 µg/mL, 30.80 µg/mL, and 33.71 µg/mL for lip scrubs, lip serums, and lip balms, respectively. Using this information, formulations for lip care products were developed, incorporating lycopene as the active ingredient. These formulations were designed to harness the antioxidant benefits of lycopene for protecting and nourishing the delicate skin of the lips. The efficacy of the lycopene-enriched formulations was assessed through in vitro and in vivo studies, demonstrating their ability to neutralize free radicals and improve lip health. Overall, this project highlights the potential of tomato-derived lycopene as a natural antioxidant for use in lip care formulations, offering effective and sustainable solutions for maintaining healthy and vibrant lips.
