Development of High Strength Concrete Used Fly Ash and Silica Fume

Author Name : Subhabrata Ghosh, Prof. (Dr.) Biman Mukherjee

ABSTRACT

Concrete is a construction material when it undergoes heavy loads foundations, columns, beams, slabs and other load bearing elements, cracks will form and to reduce this and improve high strength in concrete are used with admixtures, minerals. High Strength Concrete is made by partial replacement of cement by Fly Ash and silica fume (SF). In this research the Fly Ash used in various proportions 10%, 15% and 20% and that of silica fume by 4%, 5% and 6% by weight of cement. Fly Ash is used to replace by ordinary Portland cement used in high strength concrete. The mix proportions of concrete a constant water binder ratio of 0.4 and super plasticizer was added based on the required strength of workability, Setting time, Compressive strength. The total binder content was 450kg/m3. The concrete was cured on normal moist curing under normal temperature. The compressive strength was determined at various ages 7 days, 28 days, 56 days and 90 days. The addition of silica fume shows an early strength gaining property and that of Fly Ash shows a long-term strength. The ternary system that is OPC 53- Fly Ash - silica fume concrete was found to increase the compressive strength of concrete on all age when compared to concrete made with Fly Ash and silica fume alone. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation carried out to evaluate the compressive strength of High Strength Concrete. Concrete is the most widely used construction material in overall world due to its various advantages in the civil construction & infrastructural industries. The production of cement causes atmospheric and environmental pollution by emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Pozzolonic by products from electrical industries are supplimentory cementitious materials such as Fly Ash, Slag, Rice Husk are utilized in recent and upcoming years as cement alternative material for growing HSC with progressed workability and durability with decreased permeability. High strength concrete (HSC) is made with adding mineral admixtures like silica fume, fly ash in the concrete. Using cementitious materials such as unprocessed fly ash and silica fume in the High Strength Concrete mix gives benefits in various ways. Also that materials reduces emission of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. So these, It gives an environment friendly concrete for the sustainable development. Preparing high strength concrete by using that cementitious materials with super plasticizers gives required strength.
