Dhabla Weaving in Kachchh: Craft Techniques and Pattern Development by the Vankar Community

ABSTRACT Traditional handicrafts and the intricate techniques used in their creation, preserved solely in the minds of skilled craftsmen, form an integral part of India's intangible heritage. Handloom weaving is one of India's oldest heritage crafts, renowned for its global market visibility and value. This prestigious weaving tradition is carefully preserved and sustained by the artisan community, whose dedicated efforts ensure the continuation of this rich cultural heritage. Hand-woven textiles of Gujarat, consists diverse variety, vibrant colours and the techniques of making. Dhabla is one of the oldest hand-woven crafts of Gujarat. It is a woolen blanket or a shawl, woven by the Vankar community and worn by the Rabari community of Kachchh. The intricacy of woven motifs and unique patterns enhances the visual appeal of the textile, making it exclusive in nature. The pattern is achieved by extra weft insertion and interlocking technique.
