Direct Telugu to English Speech Translation using Discrete Units

ABSTRACT The current state of speech translation technology has limited coverage, especially for low-resource languages like Telugu. Traditional methods rely on a multi-stage approach, leading to high computational costs and error propagation. This research explores a direct speech-to-speech translation model from Telugu to English using discrete acoustic units. Our model leverages a Transformer-based architecture that translates sequences of discrete units from the source language to the target language. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces computational costs while maintaining translation accuracy, outperforming traditional spectrogram-based methods.
