E-Commerce Laws for Consumer and Transaction Protection-A Review

ABSTRACT E-commerce in India has evolved rapidly with the increasing penetration use of smartphones, digital payment methods, and regulatory measures. Growing incidence of frauds, counterfeit goods, and weak consumer protection mechanisms are posing challenges to this sector. This review discusses the legal regime in India, including the Consumer Protection Act, IT Act, and DPDP Act, and highlights gaps in enforcement, definitions of liability, and cross-border regulation. The case studies of Flipkart refund frauds, Amazon counterfeit sales, and Paytm phishing scams expose critical vulnerabilities. In order to enable a safe e-commerce environment, it would require the strengthening of cybersecurity laws, digital literacy, and self-regulation. The study recommends AI-powered fraud detection systems, blockchain-based tracking, and proactive reforms to regain consumer trust
