Economic Analysis of Value Addition in Various Products of Mango in Konkan Region of Maharashtra State (India)

ABSTRACT A study conducted in the south Konkan region to assess the economic viability of mango processing, focusing on 60 units across three tahsils from each district. Notably, 90 per cent of the entrepreneurs had established their units before 2010, showcasing substantial industry experience. The study examined the profitability of various mangoderived products, including mango pickle, mango leather (poli), mango mava, and mango syrup. Mango pickle indicated a cost per unit of Rs. 13,955, yielding an high profitable input-output ratio of 1:1.74 and a net profit of Rs. 10,389. Mango leather (poli) production, showed a per-unit total cost of Rs. 11,282 with an input-output ratio of approximately 1:2.01 and a net income of Rs. 11,349. The combined production of mango syrup, mango mava, and mango leather (poli) highlighted increased input-output ratios, emphasizing the importance of diversification. Mango syrup production, in particular, stood out with an input-output ratio of 1:2.94 and contributed 86 days of employment per unit per year, underscoring its profitability and the potential for higher profits with increased production volumes. Overall, the study advocates for the profitability of mango processing in the region and emphasizes the strategic value addition by diversifying product lines for enhanced overall profitability, units operated above break-even point proved by its value addition & financial test ratios.
